Comments: I have items from the Canberra (1943-1946), found in the personal items left by a deceased family member. Among those items, is a New Testament with the name Rolland D Strand, closest relative listed as Ted Strand. There is also what I believe to be a service #. Rolland is not our family member. Any information regarding Rolland and his family will be appreciated.

Comments: There is a U.S. Senate website that proves the Canberra served in Vietnam's inland waters. Here is the information, and where that information came from.

...The Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee website provides a list of the ships VA has acknowledged traveled in inland waters, as well as evidence about other ships that the committee has received. A list of the ships identified to have traveled in Vietnam’s inland waters by VA is available here: LINK

    http://veterans.senate.gov/press-releases.cfm?action=release.display&release_id=4acabc2b-f423-4543-ab3c-e38cece413fc

Since the Canberra served in the inland waters, that proves "boots on the ground" and is eligible for benefits.

    Good luck Shirley,

    David Holt

  • Around the World Cruise Posted on September 27, 2011 06:49 pm Name: Jesse Vineyard
    Email: jessefvineyard@hotmail.com
    Location: USA

Comments: I was aboard the Canberra during the 1960 around the world cruise. I was attached to the staff of (then) Rear Admiral J. McNay Taylor.
At that time I was a YN3. I remember serving with YN3 Bill Sessoms, YN3 Ron Eastgate, YN1 Smith and Lt B. D. Mohrn in the Flag Office. Other shipmates names have long been erased by time.

I played guitar and was in a band called the Orbits. We would play several times a week in the mess deck on or the main deck. At several ports we played at the local enlisted clubs.

I would like to hear from anyone who sailed on the 'Round the World cruise.

I am unable to attend the reunion as my wife's mother lives with us and is bed fast.

I hope you have a memorable Canberra reunion.

    Email: 40ron44@gmail.com
    Location: California

Comments: Saw a note from an old shipmate, and would like to hear from any of the R Div. gang that served during the years 66-68. The Canberra was a great ship and she helped me grow up "fast". I will never forget my first step onto Subic Bay, can't spell the the name of the town but we all know what it is, and what it was. Drop me a line if you were there.
