    Email: ma2shea@aol.com
    Location: Schenectady, NY

Comments: My father, Leo A. Shea, a plankowner who was assigned to the ship during construction, served on the Canberra during WWII, including the Oct. 13 attack. He had just been relieved of duty in the engine room and gone to an upper deck when the torpedo struck the engine room. Sadly, his friends in the engine room didn't survive the attack. He will be 86 on Sept. 9 and lives in Schenectady, NY in an assisted living facility. If anyone knows him or would like to communicate, contact me, his daughter, at the above e-mail address. He would like to hear from shipmates or anyone interested in the Canberra and its sailors.

  • Helicopter Landing Posted on June 14, 2008 04:11 am Name: Davis Newman
    Email: davisnewman@verizon.net
    Location: Barstow, CA

Comments: In summer-fall of 1968 I was a UH-1 helicopter pilot for the 1st Cavalry Division based north of Danang, RVN. I had brought one of our commanders to visit some wounded on one of the hospital ships off Danang. We got a request to go over to the USS Canberra a few miles away to pick up two sailors who were ill and needed to be transferred to the hospital ship. I remember to this day the roast beef sandwiches and hot coffee (poured into paper cups from a silver coffee pot with a teak or mahogany handle) we were served while waiting on our passengers to be brought up to the helideck. We took the sailors to the hospital ship, picked up the colonel and flew back to Camp Evans. No one would believe we had real (not canned) roast beef.

Comments: I served on the Canberra (CAG-2) from October of 1967 thru April of 1968 on it's last Vietnam cruise while it still had the missiles....We fired the 8" guns around the clock for days when the Marines took Hue. Anyone remember when we steamed for home and a fire broke out amidships in the main powder magazine....Gee, that was swell....God bless all of our Navy men. Past, present and future....(of course, all of the other services, too)

Comments: My grandfather, Harry Perry, served on the Canberra. I don't know the extent of the dates, but know he was wounded in the October 13 attack. He died several years ago - before I could ask many questions about his past. It was a very long time ago, but if anyone knew him or was also on-board at that time, please email me any stories you have. It would mean a lot to me. Thank you.
