I was trying to look up information on my Uncle, Nelson Karns, who just passed away on 6/13/12. I know he was on the USS Canberra CAG-2. I am not sure what year he served, but it would have been in the 50's/60's. Is there any list of those who were aboard during those years?
Thank you

My Pop on USS Canberra '43-'45

Comments:
My pop was on the USS Northampton (CA-26) when she was sunk on 30 Nov 1942 at the battle of Tassafaronga. He survived and I believe he was then transferred to the USS Canberra (CA-70) sometime in early 1943. I also believe he was on the Canberra when y'all went to Boston Navy Yard (16 February-17 October l945) for repairs from the Jap aerial torpedo strike that hit you on 13 October 1944.
Is it possible someone has a cruise book or some info to see if his name appears on the crew list? My pop spent his entire career in engineering. I don't know his rank or rate at that time. My guess is that he may have been a warrant or ensign. He was a mustang and retired in 1957 as a commander with 28 years of service. His last duty assignment was chief engineering officer of the battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64).
He passed from lung cancer in August 1982 at the young age of 69. His name was CDR Andrew J. "Dutch" Dallendorfer, USN, Ret. (I think he also went by the nick name "Andy" but "Dutch" was how he was known in later years). I would greatly appreciate any info you can give me or a resource that I may be able to use to get further info.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
God Bless those of the Greatest Generation for where would we be today without their courage and sacrifice.

It brings me great sadness to announce the passing of our brother and shipmate Frank Manning who served aboard 1963-1965 in 1st Division.
He is survived by his two sons and his faithful wife Carol.
He was a fun-loving guy who could always make us laugh.
I was reunited with him through this site just two years ago--may we meet again, God rest his soul, RESPECT, jim

Someone wrote me about dates of redesignation of Canberra. Was commissioned CA70, redesignated CAG2 on June 15 1956, and back to CA70 on 1 May 1968. Great ship to serve on, beautiful. Heartbreaking to see its prop in front of the Museum in San Pedro CA and remember what she was.

I am posting this in memory of my father, John C. Turek. He served aboard the Canberra as a BT3 from 1960 to 1964. He was from Youngstown, Ohio and was proud of his service. I heard so many stories about his shipmates and experiences. Sadly he passed away March 18th 2012. I found some of his pictures from his time aboard. Most are of areas in and around the ship but a couple are of unidentified shipmates. I remember a man with the last name "Waynescott" that he talked a lot about. If anyone has any information about my dad or may be able to help me identify those pictured I would be honored. Thank you.

I posted this for my dad who served on board the USS Canberra, during 1957-1961. He is in poor health but he still remembers his proud ship, as he calls her. All of these incredible events in history on this cruiser are so amazing that when my dad started letting us know them we were fascinated. I have been trying to locate a 1960 world tour book but they are very hard to find or are so expensive they are beyond my reach. I wonder if any one knows whether or not you could purchase them from the navy?

As a young boy of about 8 years I went aboard the Canberra in Melbourne. It may have been at Station pier Pt Melbourne. What a thrill for a lad! We met a short young sailor called Gary(from Cal. I think). My family took him home for Sunday roast then for a drive up through the Dandenong Ranges. He showed me round the ship & I seem to recall some damage being pointed out?? Anyway all the best to your sites' shipmates from down under.
