A fellow church member, John B. Sandifer, was a Marine assigned to the Canberra at the time of the Presidential cruise in 1957. He is now 87 and in fairly good health except for some issues with knees and legs, meaning he does not get around much any longer. But still very much alert and at himself.

The Canberra was tied up at pier 5 with the Forrestal across from us sometime in 1962 at Thanksgiving. Even so we got enough chow on our mess, we went across the pier to the Forrestal for more turkey and stuffing. Stuffed we were! Have a nice Thanksgiving with your family!

The USS Canberra Commissioning

Here we go again, me finding something to complain about, but maybe I can be excused, because of advanced age.
I did go to U-Tube and typed in USS Canberra, and it sure came up with the Commissioning ceremony of the second USS Canberra in Sidney, Australia, earlier in July.
What a disappointment for me, to see the Commissioning of a US warship to happen in another place than in the USA.
Friendship and all with the Australian Nation, because of the name of the ship in honor of the HMAS Canberra, we should have something left of pride in the USA and let the Commissioning happen stateside.
A visit to the Australian nation afterwards could have done the same thing.
To top it off, everybody involved in the commissioning ceremony pronounced the name of the ship as Canbrra, somehow forgetting that there is an "e" after the "b". Should we all have adapted the pronunciation as it happened in Australia? Respect can surely we offered in different ways. Maybe the current crew has to now pronounce the new USS Canberra in the Australian dialect?
I do not know much about radar but the side profile of the ship looks to me like a huge radar target.
And one other question is the need for a Blue and Gold crew? I get it, submarines that are submerged for long times do require the Blue/Gold crew system but a surface vessel? What does the landlocked crew do when the other crew is attached to the ship? Get classroom instructions or chip paint on some derelict?
Or maybe there is too much arthritis invading my brain as to change with the times.
I should have seen it coming, when in 1963 the order was considered to have all E5 and E6 ratings get new uniforms, like the Navy Chiefs had at the time. Just considering the lockers needed to stow all that "stuff", as if we had any room to spare for more new furniture.
There is one of two things happening as you read these lines of drivel, either you are on the floor laughing or calling me slightly insane and not normal.
Well, my memory is still good and I do remember the three years I spent on the "CanDo" and I cherish the memories.

I believe that I'm the only person living in Canberra ACT who has been on board the original USS CANBERRA when she came to Melbourne in I think 1966 or maybe 1967 for the Coral Sea celebrations. I believe she had come to Melbourne from Vietnam on R&R. She was the first WWII vintage cruiser I had ever seen. That visit sticks in my mind as a kid, I was very interested in all things navy at the time.
I was near the location in Sydney when President BUSH presented the original ship's bell to the Australian Maritime Museum for display and have seen the bell.
In addition, I visited Savo Island and saw the place HMAS Canberra was sunk. I kind of have a small connection with the USS Canberra. I may still have a brochure and a sailor's autograph (Hank SCHACLT) from that Melbourne visit of USS Canberra. I believe the crew from the new ship will be marching through Canberra soon after she is commissioned. I will try and go along and see. By the lake here they have a memorial to HMAS Canberra. They need one next to it for the USS Canberra. That would be a good project to approach the US Embassey and Australian Government about.

I was 24 and a green Ensign when I reported for duty in Hong Kong harbor in April, 1965. We deployed to Vietnam every winter from October to April for three more years. I served as R, 2nd, and 4th Div. Officer during that time. Nothing but fond memories of that beautiful ship!

My father served on the Canberra during WWII. My sister Stephanie was born (7/22/44) while he was at sea.
Our family found it ironic that the Canberra was supposed to be named the Pittsburgh because dad was from Latrobe, PA, not far from Pittsburgh.

Today is the 55th anniversary of the North Koreans capturing the Pueblo in international waters. It was the beginning of a challenging experience for the Canberra and many other ships in the Sea of Japan that cold January/February of 1968.
